Cheesemonster Grated and Grilled!

Carlie enjoys victory champagne and pizza!

Cheesemonster, that most beloved of Nowra classics. The route that causes Nowraphiles to grin with pleasure and Victorians to recoil in fear. The first route bolted at the mighty Cheesedale crag and still the most popular hard route in the country. Many bards have waxed lyrical about the pleasures offered by this 20 metre section of rock, but none so eloquently as those in the new Nowra guidebook, "start 4m right of Robochubby."

Today Cheesemonster 30 received two ticks! First cab off the rank was Carlie LeBreton who smashed the route after coming tantalizingly close in her previous two days of effort. Carlie is the third female to have climbed this grade at Nowra and the second to have claimed Cheesemonster's scalp. It's Carlie's first 8a+.

Half an hour later, Sean Powell stepped up and nabbed his first 30. Cruising the Monster on his second day.

Let The Season Begin!

Cooler weather has arrived and Nowra is is prime form. Unfortunately, the mozzies haven't been told yet and it'll take a week or so for the little buggers to die off after they've enjoyed a very damp, warm Summer breeding season. Bring the bug spray!

Yesterday, Jarmilla Tyrril sent Dungeon Master 31 at South Central, setting a new standard for female climbers at Nowra. This route has cost Jarmilla dearly as she had a rope, quickdraws and chalk bag stolen from the base of the route last week after she went around to Cheesedale to belay Zac. The rope is a light green and dark green, flecked Sterling 9.4mm, quickdraws are Petzl Spirits and the chalk bag is a Beal one. Keep an eye out for them. I think the culprits are more likely to be local kids, it would very sad if a climber is responsible for this.

On Sunday, Ryan Holmes ticked his first 30, snaring the coveted scalp of Aloha Paradise at Rosies. Ryan had to work out some very specific hold beta to control the big swing at the end of the crux sequence. And on the previous day, serial sender, Matt Norgrove completed the link-up that includes the hardest sections of two 30s. Non-Dairy Monster starts up Cheesemonster then joins Non-Dairy Cheese-Like Substitute weighing in at 31.

Some plastic crushers have finding their feet on the lovely Nowra stone. Loesje Fletcher, Lindsay Fletcher, Joshua Boyce and Niranda Wright ticked off Uncertainty Pleasure 22 in the little cave at Cheesedale while visiting Victorian, Louis Godsell, smashed Wham Bam Thank You Maam 24.

Two of Nowra's favourites, Cerin and Marcus tie the knot tomorrow.

Marcus, the original winner of the Volume category at the very first 24 Hours of Power, may look like the wild man of Patagonia in this pic, but we know him as a chalkless crushing machine.

Cerin, famous for the first ascent of Cerin's Debut at Thompson's Point, set many young climbers' heart a-flutter in the nineties climbing scene before finding the man of her dreams and stealing him away to the wilds of South America.

Nowra Rocks wishes them well and we look forward to many strong armed offspring in the near future. Just give the poor little buggers chalk bag, please Marcus!

Mid-Week Ticks

With the skies finally clearing for a few days, Tuesday became the new weekend as thousands flocked to the sacred stone of the Shoalhaven.

Matt Norgrove brought his redpointing machine and his new levels of fitness and power with him and sent Cheesemonster 30 second go of the season after working it for a bit last year. Not to be outdone, Bryson Klein (14 years old) sent his first route of 2011, Gas Krankinstation 24 in the cave on the right side of Cheesedale.

Meanwhile, back at South Central, Dave Hoyle did Brown Badge 27 and was last seen setting his sights on Maintain The Rage 27.

Welcome to Hogwarts!

Hogwarts received its first 4 routes last weekend courtesy of a team of crack young guns and a few very enthusiastic, bolting parents.

The team, comprising of Tahlia LeBreton, Bryson Klein and Minah LeBreton crushed the 3 star classics.

No that's not French Limestone, it's Minah cruising her first ever first ascent, and the first route at the crag; Wingardium Leviosa 13.

They also added Expelliarmus 14, which starts up Wingardium Leviosa's roof and heads rightwards on the head wall.

All of the routes received repeats and were confirmed as classics.

Hogwarts is only 5 minutes drive and about 3 minutes walk from North Nowra shops. It's in the shade all afternoon and has the potential for more easy routes. Watch this space for more info...

Shortly after Midnight on the first on January, Nowraphile and crusher of fine sandstone, Carlie LeBreton declared 2011 to be the Year of Nowra. The idea has caught on and gained momentum, meaning that 2011 is going to be huge!

Rod Young is nearing the completion of the most anticipated book since Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, A New Edition of the Nowra Guide!! The deadline for info, new routes and photos is the end of February, so get out there and complete those projects or bolt new ones for you chance at immortality.

Thomo's is prime before midday at the moment, especially if there's a breeze, and PC, The Grotto or the Bomaderry Creek Crags can all be good depending on the prevailing wind. But the rock's dry and a bit of spooge makes you stronger.

Then there's always the river, the nearby beaches and Jameroo!

T10 Northside 2010 - Rules

1. This is a social event. There is no registration or entry fee.

2. This events includes routes at crags around North Nowra; Lot 34, Mortein Wall, Rosies, Bartondale, The Bakery, South Central, Cheesedale, The Grotto (including all sectors from the Palm Tree Wall to the Powerlines Wall) and P.C.

3. The event starts at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday the 25th September at the North Nowra Shops Carpark. Score sheets will be handed out then. If you need a later start you can find us somewhere around South Central or the other Bomaderry Creek crags on Saturday morning.

4. Climbing concludes at 5:30 p.m. Please respect the rules by stopping climbing then. Scorecards must be handed in by 5:30p.m. at the South Central Carpark.

5. BBQ and presentation afterwards is at Shoalhaven Caravan Village.

6. There are 8 categories:

a. Open Male – Volume

b. Open Female – Volume

c. Junior Male

d. Junior Female

e. Open Male – Points

f. Open Female – Points

In addition this year there will be an ULTIMATE ROUTE! This route is currently a project, but will be opened on the day for a first ascent. The location of the Ultimate Route will be revealed on Saturday Morning at 7:30am.

7. Volume Categories – climbers attempt to climb as many routes as they can, the total number of routes climbed are counted up as the climber’s score.

8. Junior Categories – Juniors must be 16 years old or younger on the 25^th of September 2010. Juniors’ rules are the same as the Volume competition, except that routes may be top-roped or led.

9. Points Categories – in the Points category, climbers try to do their 10 hardest climbs. Each climb is awarded points according to the following table:

All route grades are according to Rod’s 2000 ‘Rockclimbing at Nowra’ guide. More recently added routes and routes that are now considered harder should be checked with the organisers (Carlie and Rob). A couple of corrections to the grades of some routes in the guide will be given.

There are bonus routes that are worth extra points.

These will be announced closer to the event.

10. Open Climbers (Volume and Points) do not have to choose which category they enter until the end of the event, however only one category may be entered.

11. Crag Lords Categories – Every climb the climber completes counts toward their final score according to the following table.

12. All routes must be led (except by Juniors) from the ground to clip the top anchors from the normal finishing stance. Top-roping (for Opens), yoyoing, soloing, roped solos, simul-climbing and anything else like that is not allowed.

13. You may only count each route in your total or score once.

14. Chill out, have fun, make new friends and catch up with old friends. Your greatest competitor is yourself.

15. Remember these crags are in residential areas, look out for local kids, dogs and when driving through suburban streets. Take care where you park and respect the residents.

16. This is a fun event. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify anyone who we consider to be cheating, spoiling the event for others, or generally being a dick.

17. You are responsible for your own safety. Climbing is potentially dangerous and the competition organisers cannot be responsible for the security of the fixed protection, the solidity of the rock or the competence of your belayer. If in doubt, back-off, have rest or go home. Just don’t try to blame us for your mistakes!

As season 2010 has kicked into full swing, it’s been action aplenty at The Home Of Power. The only thing absent has been a record of what’s been going down on this blog. So here’s my chance to put it right and satisfy the thirst for information that I know all you Nowraphiles out there crave.

New routes are always the most newsworthy occurrences, so we’ll kick it off with a mention of the awesome new lines everyone’s favourite dad-to-be Graham Fairbairn has added out at Babylon. G-Man has rejuvenated this old Nowra backwater by adding 2 stellar new routes up an impressive orange wall that previously only had a girdle across it. The left line is Something Jumpy 26 and the right Father Figure 28. Both 3 stars and there’s plenty more to do on this wall.

On the repeats front, there’s been stacks done so here’s a summary listed by climbers. Apologises to anyone or anything I’ve missed…

The most active climber has been Mick Wells. Another Croweater, come to test himself on the glorious rock of the Shoalhaven, Mick has worked his way through the classics, ticking off; Dungeon Master 31, Physical Graffiti 31, Non-Dairy Cheese-Like Substitute 30, Cheesemonster 30, Comin’ At Ya Pundi 29, Black Flag 29, Plastic Exploding Inevitable 29, Vehicle of Hate 28, Baby Just Don’t Bite It 28, Brother In A Bodybag 28, White Trash 27, Maintain the Rage 27 and Brown Badge 27. And heaps of other stuff. You get the idea, he’s done lots.

Matt Pascoe, back on 2 pegs and crushing, has achieved many PBs including; Skin To Skin 29, Baby Just Don’t Bite It 28, Top One Thomo 27, Brown Badge 27 and Maintain The Rage 27.

Local hero, Will Watkins onsighted The Hustler 24.

Mel Shields did that crotchety South Central testpiece, Scum 25.

Matt Norgrove ticked Brown Badge 27 and Plastic Exploding Inevitable 29.

Pete Tosen made it back down to Nowra, getting in an ascent of the neglected classic, Mr Bubbles 29 over at Bartondale.

Logan Barber slipped in an ascent of Brown Badge 27.

Marc Edwards has ticked off Sexy Is The Word 31.

Jason Smith tackled the Girls In The Hood 24 and pulled off an onsight.

Fred Bonnet did the classic Top One Thomo 27.

Tragedy struck on Brother In A Bodybag 28 when a taxi driver, frustrated with his own project, decided to give it a go and ripped off the crucial/key undercling hold on the crux. The undercling will forever be fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to fondle it. Apparently the move still goes with a different sequence.

A couple of old favourites have received new steel. The starts of Ain’t No Sunshine and Lost Weekends have both sprouted shiny new rings.

I’ll add more and fill in the gaps soon! Keep cranking!

Mrs L the Strong

Nowra's golden daughter, Carlie LeBreton, has continued to apply her off-season power gains. Last week, she sent her first climb of the magical grade of 8a, Skin To Skin 29 in the Grease Cave, Thompson's Point.

Many years ago, when the rock was younger and the sky was brighter, as a 20 year old, Carlie climbed her first 28, Vehicle Of Hate. She then turned her attention to Skin To Skin. After much work, she could redpoint to a few moves from the end. Alas, at this time tragedy struck and injury caught up with her, robbing Carlie of all strength and stability in her right shoulder.

Carlie then spent years trying to recover her injury and with it, her intense psych. She also turned her attention to wooing and marrying her Prince Charming. Finally she succumbed to the inevitable and went under the knife and had the shoulder wrenched and screwed back into place. And so the rehab program began. Step by step she worked her way back to her former strength, power and fitness levels. As her skills grew, so did her confidence and determination.

After quickly adding 2 more to the 28s to her repertoire this season, she again turned her attention to Skin To Skin. The low crux move proved a little tricky to work out initially, but was soon sorted. On her second day on the route this year she redpointed past her old highpoint twice. The next day Carlie was at Nowra, Skin To Skin was ticked and she was the happiest girl south of the Illawarra.

Returning from a trip to the Red River Gorge in the US with a spring in his step and plenty of juice in his forearms, Al Pryce has hit Nowra in form. He made an onsight ascent of Black Flag 29 and a first attempt send of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 29 at South Central and then made a short work of Attack Mode 32 over at PC. Spurred on by the new projects bolted at PC recently, he is reportedly relishing the chance to sink some steel.

As Season 2010 finally kicks off it’s thongs and pulls on a down jacket, the ascents are starting come. Logan Barber, recently moved from Western Australia to NSW under our climber resettlement program stamped his mark on South Central, cranking his way up Dungeon Master 31.

Marc Landers pulled off an onsight of Bachelor Busted Balling Bimbo 25 at PC, and added Thank You, Come Again 25 at PC and Lipstick 25 at The Grotto to his dance card.

Canberra lad, Ryan Holmes has kicked off his season with an ascent of Brown Badge 27 at South Central.

With the rock as dry as a tin roof in Outback Queensland, the sends have been starting to flow. Carlie LeBreton has made her pitch for 2010 Player of the Season with ascents in the past 2 weeks of Ain't No Sunshine 28, Baby Just Don't Bite It 28, Brown Badge 27 and Maintain The Rage 27.

Scott Pritchard has been ticking his way through the classics, with ascents of Slut Whipping 26, Trigga Nigga 25 and Bachelor Busted Balling Bimbo 25. Matt Tsang, only only his 4th day ever climbing on rock, and his first at Nowra, flashed There Goes The Neighbourhood 24 and added an extension to Strike 22, mantling past the anchors and finishing on the Hunted Child anchors (it'll get its own anchor soon). The grade stays the same.

Wollongong climber Oliver Kerr has been ticking through the classics, cruising Mega Mac 25 and Butts of Beef 25.

Yes climbers, that thing you dragged out of the bottom of the cupboard this week is a jumper, and it is probably still smells like the crag from last season. This can only mean one thing, Nowra season is nigh!

The mozzies are feeling the chill and going back to their miserable haunts, the rock is feeling sticky and the routes stand ready, waiting.

Sharik Walker has already got the ball rolling with a new 26 to the right of F.I.I.K. at PC. It starts out of the tree apparently, we're looking forward to Sharik revisiting it with a saw.

Carlie LeBreton pulled off a powerhouse repeat of Sex Machine 26 at South Central and even I managed to find a route I hadn't done before and did Exploding Plastic Inevitable 29.

Unreported from late last year was Nathan Hoette's link up of a skyline traverse of PC which starts up Dude Food, goes into Vogue for a bit and then into Church of Christ before following the summit ridge along past the Turn Your Eyes anchors to join Hopelessly Devoted to You just before its crux for the journey upwards to the anchors. Dedicated to Dude isn't an easy tick at 31.

2010 - The Year of the Tiger

While this blog went into Summer hibernation, I am sure lots has been going down at the cliffs of Nowra. We were down there last weekend and the rock was like gold. The mozzies were out in force, but the climbing was sensational.

The RTA has finally opened the new road south of Albion Park, fulfilling a promise that Kevin Rudd personally made at last year's T10 to improve access for this year winter session. It takes at least 10 min off the drive, giving you time for at least one more redpoint.

So who has been ticking over summer? There has to be some hard core Nowraphiles that have been climbing, bolting and sweating over summer. Let us know of your ticks (the climbs, not the biting kind. Unless they were in amusing places).

It's going to be a huge year. What this space!

Dude. It's his crag.

Saturday delivered the promised fantastic conditions and the lycra clad rock warriors flocked to the warm stone of Thompson's Point to celebrate 20 years of Australia's premier sport crag.

By the end of the day, President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge declared it to be the best T10 ever, to the roar of an exuberant crowd.

The prizes were shared between the old school Nowra die-hards and the new generation of Nowraphiles who have ventured south to make the sacred rock their own.

The Male Points prize and the title of Undisputed Best Rock Climber went to Sharik Walker who cranked numerous 30's, multiple 29's and several 28's. The Female Points prize was claimed by Lauren Chandler who's consistent approach to ticking the classics ensured her place in the history books.

Newcastle's perpetual motion machine, Dan Wilde, left no ring-bolted stone unturned as he churned his way through the gems to claim 27 scalps on his way to claiming the Male Volume prize. Jo Whittaker, after being coerced into changing categories, forwent second place in the Points Category to take out the prize in the Female Volume category. Fitting reward for a day of chasing the chains on many routes.

The Crag Lords are the seasoned players, the climbers that know the routes like their own children. Each move to them is like a part of that child's life, something to be savoured. Fittingly, the Male Crag Lord prize was shared this year by two of Nowra's most beloved sons who battled it out, trading route for route all day only to end up tied. Andrew Bull and Graeme Fairbairn's names will be forever immortalised on the Male Crag Lords trophy. The Female Crag Lord title, went to one of Nowra's most ardent supporters, Lucy Ellis, with a powerhouse display of tickage.

The Juniors, the young guns of T10, were all about volume too. Whether on lead or top-rope these young bucks and does didn't stop all day and went the full-time whistle blew, Bryson Klein had cranked out 17 routes and Loesje Fletcher topped out on 16!

The Best Dressed Award went to a cross between Warwick Capper and Dan Osman, a mullet wearing, Guns 'n' Roses loving Dave Berry.

The Best Effort Award went to the pre-T10 effort of Rachel Musgrave, who traveled all the way from New Zealand to be part of the event. Rachel, a veteran of the early years of Nowra, couldn't resist the thought of seeing all the boys she gazed out so longingly in the past clad in skin tight, super thin lycra. Special mention must also be made to another group of mad Kiwis who made the trip over the dutch and impressed everyone with their fire jumping skills. Forecast is Good

Three days to go and the weather looks good! The forecast is for fine weather and 20 degrees. Sounds like cranking conditions!

Carlie and I have ordered 120 sausages and we'll have rolls handy at the BBQ. You're welcome to bring your own bits to chuck on the barbie if you prefer something a bit more 'haute cuisine' or food that wasn't running about in a paddock recently. As there are no entry fees we would appreciate if people could throw a few dollars in the bucket at the BBQ to cover the costs of the food and the scoresheets. Last year we broke even, but if there's any money left over we'll put it back into the cliff in the form of stainless steel.

As per tradition, the prizes for the winners in each category will be cakes, plus this year the "Nowra The Home of Power" perpetual trophies will be unveiled. A big shoutout to Matt Klein for making the trophies and Bruce Cameron for the amazing oil painting detail on them. You'll know what I mean when you see them, they're works of art.

With only 2 Weeks until Thomo's T10 descends on Thompson's Point, there are a few things you need to know...

Thomo's T10 is a social event designed to get climbers together to have a lot of fun. The competition aspect of it is just there to add to the fun, but not meant to be taken too seriously.

The BBQ afterward will be held at Shoalhaven Caravan Village. There are cabins and plenty of camping space there, and nice bathrooms!

To get there, coming from the north, turn left at the second set of lights (Moss Street) after the bridge, just after the speed camera. Follow this road past Nowra High and after it curves right Shoalhaven Caravan Village is on the left.

For the Opens and Youths (16 and under) the same scoring system will be used as last year. Opens must redpoint their route to get the points but Youths may top-rope. Bonus point routes will be announced shortly.
There will be no Junior Category for 18 and 19 year olds!
Pumpers get one point for every route they redpoint, whether it's a 13 or a 30!
The Crag Lord Category is open to climbers who have been climbing for more than 20 years or have 5 children (photographic evidence required!).
Crag Lords must also redpoint every route. they score 1 point for routes grade 15 and lower, 2 points for routes graded 16 to 20 and 3 points for routes graded 21 or harder.
In all categories, you can only count a individual route once (no laps).

Climbing starts at 7:30 am and finishes at 5:30 pm.

Dave Filan, the man who put up the first route at Thomo's, has right of way at all times.

The organisers take no responsibility for your safety, climbing is dangerous, hitting the ground hurts.

2009 kicks it up a gear

With routes being sent at a blistering increasing rate, the pace has been furious lately at The Home Of Power. Two significant new routes have been added and many old classics revisited as a cast of thousands including newly anointed Nowra climbers and old favourites continue to express their joy on the beautiful rock.

New Routes!!

The first of the new routes to find its way across the stone that loves to be climbed was Al Pryce's Hamgirdlar 31 at Cheesedale. This instant classic starts up Wam Bam Thank You Mam 24 and heads right, crossing Al's 2008 addition to the crag, Strike of the Silver Fox 27 and punching further out the roofs. Meanwhile, Matt Adams rediscovered an abandoned Paul Westwood project starting up Old, Fat and Married 17 at Bartondale and continues powerfully up the bulging wall above. Mr Teeny weighs in at grade 30.

The repeats have been plentiful.

Bloc master, Marc Edwards showed his versatility, redpointing the shortest and longest routes at south central; Sperm Bitches 31 and Dungeon Master 31.
Mayor of Faulconbridge, Andi Richardson found time betwen ground falls to repeat Metamophisis 30 at Cheesedale and Comin at Ya Hyper 27 at South Central.
Pistol Pete Tosen continued to roam the comeback trail with an ascent of Lover Boy 30 at Thomo's.
Sir Tickalot, Luke Geelen continued on his merry way, adding Brown Badge 27 to his 2009 booty bag.
Young Penrith gun, Thom Samuels had great day. Having previously climbed only one 25, he tore Nowra up, onsighting Mega Mac 25 and doing Red Baron 26 4th go!
Heather finally stopped listening to Nathan Hoette's beta and heeded the wise words of the man with the golden touch, Luke Geelen, to send Top One Thomo 27.
Wollongong's most eligible bachelor, Paul Mehag settled an old score with Frosty 29.

Canberra wunderkind, Dan Fisher has been filling in the gaps on his tick-list and churned his way through a host of classics. Including redpointing: Frosty 29, Krusty 28, Brown Badge 27 and Top One Thomo 27, and onsighting: Potato Junkies and Pale Yellow Underwear, both 24.

1 Month to Go!

It's only one month until Thomo's T10 and the frenzy of excitement is building. Rumours have been circulating that Swedish rockers, Europe, will be playing their 80s hit "The Final Countdown" at the after-party are totally unfounded and have been neither confirmed nor denied by the organisers.

What we can reveal is that a new category has been added to the line-up! The Crag Lords category is open to climbers who have been climbing for longer than Thomo's has been around (ie. more than 20 years) or have at least 5 children. There will be a different scoring system for the Crag Lords. Stay tuned for more details.

Clothing chainstore, Supre have reported being inundated by climbers wanting to deck themselves from head to foot in lycra. Apparently the tights and body hugging tops have been disappearing off the racks. So shop up soon.

Nowra continues to be the place to tick. Some notable ascents of late include, Will Curry cranking his way along the roof and up the wall to complete Attack Mode 32. Bloc strongman, Marc Edwards cruised his way up the climb known in polite circles as 'Sandy Beaches', Sperm Bitches 31 and Pickles, Nick Cormack, did the feisty Sideshow Bob 27 over at Bartondale. Visiting American Chris Linder crushed Slip Slop Slap 29 into submission, having recently made short work of Punks and various other slabs in Victoria.
Brecon Littleford ticked off Livin' The Hustlers Dream 28, reporting unbelievably good conditions over at the Hood. G-Banger, Luke Gelan, topped out on Still Life With Chalk Bag 26 after taking a "deck" fall onto the halfway ledge. Undeterred the Sutherland Slinger went back up and sent the rig. Norrie, Matt Norgrove, ticked off Butts Of Beef 25, his hardest Nowra tick to date. As for me, I was keen for a tick, but I neeed some 2009 climbing Karma. So I strapped some home-made, cardboard, South Australian number plates onto my car, changed my name to 'GeBreton', drank a litre of Murray River water and sent Loverboy 30.

Leroy R.I.P.

Leroy “The Captain” LeBreton
15 March 1995 - 7 July 2009

A significant figure in the climbing world, Leroy passed away this week after a life filled with fun, food and adventure. Having spent a good part of his life at the crag, he was laid to rest in the family backyard, close to the action, and a tribute to him will be established at his favourite crag, PC.

Leroy started going climbing from the moment he became mine. He had many climbing adventures. He was in my backpack, head poking out the top, as I climbed up the 30 metre high and overhanging at the top access rungs at the Gaza Strip (Nowra). He took a massive fall down the steep creek around from PC, bouncing from ledge to ledge, only to walk away unscathed at the bottom, in typical Leroy style. He managed to climb to within a few metres of the top of the crag near the rungs at PC while trying to follow Paul Westwood to the bakery. And, he soloed the first 15 metres of Deceptor, grade 10, at Zigzag in the Mountains when trying to follow Minah up her first big climb.

He was hit in the head with a cricket bat chasing the ball, he had a half tonne block of concrete fall on him, he fell off a cliff at Wave Wall, but he always shook himself off and walked away from it. He dodged a bar-fridge sized block I knocked off while cleaning a new route by centimetres. Nothing ever got him down. He was always just as keen to play, eat and make the most of life.

In his final breaths Leroy asked me to pass on a few thankyous. “Thanks to everyone who took the time to throw a ball, throw a stick, share some lunch or just give me a pat. Thanks to Paul who always brought a custard tart to the crag and left on a rock for me to eat when I felt like it. I could tell he enjoyed seeing me eat it because he always jumped up and down and danced around just as I was licking up the final crumbs. Thanks to Boydo for all the pies (but seriously, vegetarian?). I’m sorry Mike for weeing on your lap in the back seat of the Beetle. It’s been a good life being a crag dog, a family dog and a legend.”

I would like to say thank you to Leroy. He’s been my companion for fourteen years. During my darkest times, he was there for me. No matter what he was loyal, happy and lifted me up. In my most joyful times he was there to share them too. He was the most trustworthy dog to have around children and never said no to a game. He was my training partner; always at the board keeping me company and helping me get me out of bed for early runs. But perhaps most importantly he was an amazing teacher. He taught me how to be good father, before I had children. He taught me about passion, enthusiasm and focusing my energy. He taught me that no matter how bad things may seem, it’s still fun to chase the ball.

Attack of the Crow-Eaters

The latest fashionable accessory this season at Nowra is South Australian number plates on your car. Not content with giving the sporting world the Adelaide Hurricane, Shaun Tait, SA keeps sending it's finest crankers over to hone their trade on the Nowra proving grounds. The latest to come were Mick Wells and Bill Baggins. Refusing to do anything less than awesome, the boys from South Oz still had plenty to keep them busy. Over a week Mick managed to collect 105 stars, and Bill managed 91. In amongst the tidal wave of classics, Mick ticked Ain't No Sunshine 28, Hard Candy 27 and Top One Thomo 27 and onsighted Butts of Beef 25, Trigga Nigga 25, and Mega Mac 25. Bill Ticked the tidy bag of Stone Roses 26, Slut Whipping 26, A Piece of Cake 25 and Trigga Nigga 25. With tired arms, they retreated home to spread the word of Nowra's superiority to the rest of the Adelaide Clan.

Meanwhile, Sydney-based, reformed Adelaidians have been busy ticking too. Continuing his purple streak, G-Banger, Luke Geelen added Top One and Maintain The Rage 27 to his hefty bag. Matt Adams and Sharik Walker have both ticked off Narcosis 30 and Lover Boy 30. Lover Boy is a variant finish to Narcosis, taking the Baby Just Don't Bite It finish, rather than the normal straight up one.

Keeping the flag flying for the locally raised climbers, G-Man added another new route to Cheesedale! This one starts about 15 metres right of the the crack, Strike of the Silver Fox 27, and heads diagonally right. Another classic, Super Average Man 26. In the ladies lounge, word is that Jess Tam did Mega Mac 25 and Mel Head ticked the classic Beefmaster 23 at Mortein Wall. Doug Roden onsighted Betty Blue 24 and George Broadfoot ticked off an old nemesis, Top One Thomo.

Well, since the date for Thomo's T10 was released this week, Vinnies have been inundated with climbers desperate for lycra, stripes and hand-knitted vests. Vinnies CEO, St Vincent, was quoted in Sydney media reports as saying, "it's been our busiest week ever, we had to send to Europe for back-up supplies of bad lycra."

So, if your one of those who need a few fashion tips for the big event, to get your 80s wardrobe happening, here's a few tips...

You could go Seppo style. The Americans love a fashion trend and know how to milk it to it's full.
Here we see an American visitor on an early attempt to repeat Married and Mortgaged 30?. The rock was a bit more golden back then!

Of course if you've gone to the trouble of stuffing a pair of footy sox down the front of your white tights make sure you heel-hook as often as possible, even on slabs.

And, it's not all about lycra. There's nothing wrong with a good pair of short shorts and a stripey muscle shirt. Here, Todd Skinner demonstrates on an early attempt at Shufflepuff 22.

Euros are the true style-masters. Yes the tights are enough to send passers-by into epileptic fits and the harness can be seen from outer-space, but the real fashion statement here is the casual chalk-up while cutting loose.

Of course you could just raid my cupboard, there's no shortage of classic outfits in Faulconbridge. Why not go the metro-sexual-before-it-was-cool pink ensemble? (sorry about it being sideways)

The Leopard print is sure to get you up that project in the Grease Cave, as demonstrated here on the first ascent of Top One Thomo 27.

The famed 24 Hours of Power has morphed this year into Thomo's T10.

Thomo's T10 will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Thompson's Point.

When: Saturday 15th August, 2009.
What: 10 routes in 10 hours, a scoring system will be unveiled later, and the popular pumper category will be be back.
Theme: 80's climbing attire, raid the local Vinnies or the back of your wardrobe and deck yourself out in lycra, short shorts, neck-kerchiefs, fluros and stripey pants.

Why?: so you can tell your grandkids you were there!

Putting in a strong early bid for the man of the season, G-man, Graham Fairbairn, has added a new route to Cheesedale and climbed an old classic. He started up Squeeze Me Hard, went into Dick Me Raw and punched out through the roof above, past 2 more rings to a high anchor to create the instant classic Dick Me Raw Some More 25. A route befitting Cheesedale both in quality and in name. But his work was not done. He had been trying the testpiece, Cheesemonster 30 and was getting close, but then had to spend last Sunday falling off the start and kicking his belayer, Dude, in the nuts numerous times. He returned last Tuesday and sent the Monster.

Meanwhile reports were coimg in from Thomo's...
"After giving up his life in Mount Gambier SA, a 10 year dream came true for Luke Geelander (G-Banger) in his search for hard Nowra routes. For a number of years, Luke has been after one of Thompson Point's ultimate gems. Last Sunday his dreams came true! For years, Luke had grappled with the crux taking numerous 10 metre whippers, until the body clicked into gear and Stone Roses 26 went down! To the roars of the of the onlookers that had gathered at the base of the climb, Luke lifted a great tombstone from his shoulders."

Long Weekend Goes Bananas

Last weekend was the infamous Nowra June Long Weekend. Some think it's all about a day off to get over your flu, others lament that it's a day off when you can't go to the beach and a former PM thinks it has something to do with an old lady in a god-forsaken country. But those in the know, those that have seen the light, those who dare to fondle the treasured stone, know that the June Long Weekend is all about Nowra.

And come they did. The carparks were full, the crags were busy, the weather Gods provided outstanding conditions and a good time was had by all. The biggest news came from Pistol Pete Tosen who dried himself off, picked the wax off his chest and sent Narcosis 30 at Thomo's. Sharik Walker strolled out along Baby Just Don't Bite It 28 and Lucky Chance did the under-appreciated classic Lovebug 27.

Among the fortunate ones were a band of young climbers, many sampling their first taste of the Nowra rock. Among the best ascents from this merry band of junior crankers was Bryson Klein's (age 11) top-rope ascent of Killer Boas 22, Lindsey Fletcher's (also 11) outstanding leads and unstoppable enthusiasm and Minah LeBreton (9) cranking everything up to grade 18!

The teenagers managed a few ticks, Nick Wagland onsighted Potato Junkies 24, a route which was then flashed by Scott Pritchard. Scott also ticked off, Butts of Beef 25 and Hyperactive Child 25. Nicole Farrell flashed Murdoch 22 and redpointed Pulling On the Porcelain 23.

But but by far the maost impressive ascents from this group came from the parents who showed the kids a thing or two about toughening up! Mother and father of 5, Jenny and Cam Fletcher cranked everything in sight, Jeff Crass and Carl Deininger didn't let up and Matt Klein ticked a long term project.

Matt on Killer Boas

Matt first tried Killer Boas last year, not feeling confident enough to lead it. He came back about a month ago and after a top-rope decided to go for it. He powered through the crux and got up to the mantle with his elbows up near his ears. Pushing up with his legs, above the last bolt, with the chain close enough to lick, he couldn't hold on any longer and took a screamer, dragging his belayer G Man up to the first bolt and stopping inches off the ground! He decided to call it a day then but was back for the long weekend. After training at the Faulconbridge Institute Of Sport, he hiked Killer Boas, managing to do it just before his son Bryson, phew!

Steve Moon imagining that it's 30 years ago and he's back at Glenbrook Gorge on Kippax Crack. Really he's on Shufflepuff 22. Watch closely kids, you can't learn these skills on a campus board.

More news from last weekend was Pickles' (Nick Cormack) ascent of Krusty 28 at Bartondale. And, from a few weekends ago, Gary from Hong Kong made very impressive onsight of Beefcake 27 at Thomo's, route that gets few repeats. My guess is he didn't want to fall off and have to put himself through it again! A big thanks to Matt Pascoe for being the first person to submit news via the Message Board.

After the premium early conditions enjoyed so far this year, an onset of the wet stuff was inevitable. But while much of the east coast drowned, climbing was still possible at Nowra last weekend.

South Central was the place to be on Saturday, with 33 people counted at the crag at one point in the day and plenty more coming and going as the day progressed. Al Pryce set the standard with an ascent of Crenshaw Boulevard 31. Faulconbridge's ticking machine Andi Richardson brought his form with him, making short work of Black Rage 28 and local Wollongong boy Matt Mellor ticked off two 26s, Red Baron and Megadeath, despite limiting himself to only half the holds on the routes! Over at Rosies, Luke Geelander was trying to set a new record for falling off at the chains the most times but accidently clipped them, bagging Super-Size Me 26. Meanwhile at PC, Swiss Tom cranked out the classic Turn Your Eyes Insane 26.

Sunday started off hopeful, with clear skies and cool temperatures, but things turned nasty pretty quickly. Soon the heavens opened and dumped their load on the lovely south coast. South Central became a point of no return as the creek swole and swallowed the track. That was about all the action recorded as climbers slipped and slided and greased off everthing.

Over at Thomo's however there was more action as Al sent his second route of the weekend, Sexy Is The Word 31. Not a bad weekend to celebrate your 29th birthday!

Season 09 Flying

Despite the deafening silence from Nowra Rocks, the 2009 Nowra season is up and running! The biggest news thus far is 16 year old Daniel Fisher's quick ascent of Sperm Bitches 31 at South Central. Dan polished his first 8b off in 2 days, only a few weeks before he did Aint' No Sunshine 28, his previous hardest tick! Another Canberra lad, Dan Smith did his first 24, There Goes The Neighbourhood. Also at South, while the Mountains was buffeted by cyclonic winds and sub-zero temperatures, Luke Geelan enjoyed perfect conditions to hike up Red Baron 26 and Carlie LeBreton styled her way up Scum 25. Meanwhile, Graeme Fairbairn was wrestling with Comin' At Ya Hyper 27, a torrid tustle that took a mid-week trip before it was decided in G-man's favour.

Over at PC, Al Pryce got back into the Nowra spirit with an ascent of Vogue 30. And over at Thomo's, everyones favourite provocateur, Lucky Chance did Top One Thomo 27 and Pitch strong boys, Mark Withers and Marc Landers did the under-rated classic Lovebug 27.

On more important matters, the post-climbing feeding offerings are still being analysed, but we will try to get some reviews of local eateries up soon. One establishment that has been declared a winner for those driving north after climbing is the Werri Beach Fish Shop.

Closer to the crag, the River Deli has long had a reputation for providing the finest coffee south of the 'Gong, but now they are also offering dinner. In the spirit of Masterchef, a group of climbing 'foodies' ventured into to review its offerings. The menu promised local fare, cooked simply. It was straight from the Gordon Ramsey songbook. True enough the food was good, but a little short on the extras or those of us used to pub-fare. A few vegies or a bit of salad on the side would have been welcome. A bit pricey for your average climber, and I'm still not sure about the apple on the pizza...

And so the search continues..

Andy's Gone!

As the Global Financial Crisis deepens and climate change takes it toll, many fine institutions is Western Society are decaying. And so it is with the latest victim of the financial meltdown. Andy's Burgers at Nowra, renowned feeder of climbers and fueller of Sunday redpoint is no more. The catastrophic news was relayed around the Sydney climbing community recently.

Shocked and saddened by this event, climbers have written moving obituaries in the local newspaper and have petitioned Kevin Rudd to bail out Andy's as part of the government's financial stimulus package. Climbers have despaired at finding another quality post-cragging eating venue with the Nowra season fast approaching. Just when it seemed that things could get no worse, came the devastating news that Bar Italia, the pasta place, has also gone under.

Is this the end for fine foods in Nowra?

Or is it an opportunity?

Will a Phoenix rise from the ashes of Andy's to take it's place?

Or will it tuna pasta at the campsite?

Will an enterprising, culinarily gifted climber take the plunge, live the dream and open his/her own eating place?

Or will Mentzy see the light and move to Nowra to open his much talked about cafe?

Only time will tell. But, we can only pray for a miracle before the season starts.

Forget cricket, climbing at Nowra is the summer sport!

Actually, don't forget cricket, particularly if you're an up and coming spin bowler. We need more of them!

But Summer is the new Winter at Nowra in 2008/2009. Conditions at South Central were nothing short of excellent last Saturday! The true believers who made the trek down, abandoning the drizzle, mist and fog of the mountains, were surprised to find the crags not only dry, but the rock sticky! Sunday was nearly as good. PC was bone dry apart from a couple of holds under the roof and all the Creek crags were very climbable.

Don't forget the mozzie spray though, those little suckers bite harder than a Wave Wall crimper!

End of the Season?

Having been a bit slack on the Nowra news reporting front, an update is well overdue. 'Man of the Season' Al Pryce reports that back on the 20th of September he made the first ascent of the much admired roof crack to the right of Wham, Bam at Cheesedale. To quote Al, "On a very warm Nowra day, Strike of the Silver Fox was born. Grade 27. I need to add a few more bolts but it's still ok to climb." Al went on to suggest that Nowra season is closed and mountains season is open. With temperatures soaring it seems the thing to do...

But upon arriving back in the country after a successful trip crushing the tiny pockets of the Frankenjura, (see Mad Dog Production's new movie 'My Left Foot' debuting on youtube tomorrow) Nowra stalwart Matt Adams headed to the Bluies and promptly declared the Nowra season back open and vowed to fight on down south. Showing incredible faith in the fabled miracle conditions delivered by the 'Shoalhaven Doctor' on hot summer afternoons, he boldly predicted many hard ascents this summer!

Adam McClain seems to have taken Matt's words to heart and pulled out an onsight of The Big Kahoona 24 at Thompson's Point yesterday.

So is the season over? Is summer merely a slowing or will Matt's dream of a golden summer of ascents be realised? What this space...

G Man v. Frosty - A tale for those who love happy endings...

A story that has been over a decade in the making came to a happy conclusion at Rosies a few weeks ago. Frosty, now a classic 29, was the first route bolted at this crag in he early nineties shortly after the crag was discovered by Paul Westwood.

Jarred McCulloch put the bolts in and originally envisioned the line going right to the top of the crag (the finish still hasn't been climbed). At the time, Jarred's dreams were haunted by the sinister figure of Frosty the Bondage Clown who had a fetish for the colour orange! And so the route was named. After departing the Nowra scene to start breeding, Jarred bequeathed the route to Graham Fairbairn, then commonly known as Little Graham. Graham sensibly decided to route should finish at the obvious break, below the 8c finish and threw himself at it for a while. During this time the route became controversial as a bottom-feeder tried to steal the first ascent. To prevent this, a tyre was padlocked to crux bolt for a while! Graham then burned himself out and abandoned Frosty, Nowra and climbing all together.

As this saga was unfolding the real estate around Frosty was increasing as every other piece of climbable rock at Rosies was bolted, cleaned and climbed. Frosty went from lonesome figure on mighty wall to one of a number of classic lines. But Frosty sat idle and unloved until Andrew Bull took up the challenge and made the first ascent. A few years Graham, now known as G Man fell in love with climbing again and has jumped back into the sport with he same passion he had a teenager 15 years ago. Frosty still called G like a siren luring a sailor onto the fatal rocks. But this time a more cunning navigator was on the bridge and the G Man sailed safely to the anchors!

Things continue to buzz along at Nowra with plenty of ascents of all the classics. JJ got the coathanger out in the Grease Cave and busted into the Vehicle Of Hate 28 for a well deserved tick. At Bartondale, Christina Bedard found joy on the smooth stone of Krusty 28 while nearby at Rosies, Al Price made a rare ascent of the punishing Beefmeister 32 and Andi Richardson cruised up Frosty 29. Al's been going bonkers with the bolt drill, so watch this space for more new route action! (As always, please keep off the routes until they're climbed.) There's been plenty more happening, but as we've been unable to make it down for a few weeks we haven't had our finger on the Nowra pulse. So if you've done anything or know of anyone that has, let us know. Email us at climbsomemore@yahoo.com.au and we'll put it up. We don't want this blog to only be about hard routes from a select few.

More Good Times

Before departing our shores for more limestone endowed places Vince and Helen Day spent three weeks getting into the traveling climber lifestyle at Nowra. Where else would you start a world tour of classic sport climbing areas? Helen added Shocked 26 and a second ascent of Chuck Steak 26 to the list of routes previously reported and Vinnie made the third ascent of Tramp Stamp/Trailer Trash 32 in the Grease Cave. There's a bit of confusion about the name of this route because even Zac's not sure what he called it! He told some people Tramp Stamp and others Trailer Trash. He likes to keep us on our toes!

Meanwhile Zac Vertrees has been working his harder version of the Grease Cave roof. This one goes up White Trash to just before the chain then follows a rib leftwards to join Tramp Stamp about halfway through the roof! This one's so good it's going to need at least three names!

Al Price's insatiable appetite for tickage has continued unabated with a recent ascent of Black Parasite (now considered more like 31 than the original 29!) and a flash of Comin' At Ya Pundy 29 shortly after redpointing The Para.

Lauren Chandler continues to work her way through the classics with recent ascents of Sid Vicious 26, Games Burger 25, Abdulmajid 24 and How Much Can a Koala Bear? 24.

At Thomo's, Chris Webb-Parsons made a flash ascent Vehicle Of Hate 28 and ticked the now fashionable Still Life With Chalk Bag 26.

The much talked about project of the moment is Al's monstrosity over at Cheesedale. This route climbs Metamorphosis 30 (a route first bolted by Brian Rattenbury, ground up, and climbed a few years ago by Pete Tosen after Rat took up fishing) and then launches through some crazy boulder problems and lots of very steep territory. As the route follows the biggest, steepest line at Cheesedale, people have been sniffing around up there for years. At about the same time Cheesemonster was being bolted, Tony Barten put the first dogging bolts in, bolting down about a third of the route before deciding he had bitten off more than he could chew and abandoning the route. Some years ago, Zac continued Tony's work, added more dogging bolts and drilled a few ring slots, but didn't come back. In finally fully bolting the thing and starting work on it Al has invested his own time, effort, funds and vision and deserves a fair crack at it. Please respect that and stay off the route.

Season 08 Hots Up

Season 2008 at Nowra just keeps getting hotter! Actually, I mean cooler. Literally that is. Cool temperatures, southerlies and clear skies have meant that the holds have been sticky and the sendage is happening. The Al and Andi show rolled into the creek on Saturday and left all routes in their wake. They warmed up at The Grotto both sending the now classic Funky Gripsta 27, Al flashing the route. Funky G also received a quick ascent from Dapto's own Paul Mehag. Onto the creek, Al cleaned up Mr Bubbles 29, Sideshow Bob 27 and flashed Krusty 28 at Bartondale, and did Aloha Paradise 30 at Rosies. Not one to be left out, Andi, having put Physical Graffiti 31 to bed midweek, also got in on the action with a fast send of Mr Bubbles.

Meanwhile, over at Thompson's, Helen Day got her world tour off to a flying start with ascents of Still Life With a Chalk Bag 26 and Cowboy Junkies 25. Blueys Hard Women Jarmila Tyrril put her fingers of steel to good use and sent Skin To Skin 29, following up her recent ascent of White Trash 27.

Sunday was also exciting, with Chris Webb-Parsons ticking the stout Beefmeister 32.

It's a bit off topic, but there is a buzz on the street about the "Nowra Of The North", The Goat Cave at Buladelah. This fine piece of crazy stone has been a closely guarded Newcastle secret for at least the past 100 years. Justin Jefferson and Dan Wilde have finally given up ignoring the longest, steepest section and have some wild pumpfest projects on the go. You'll need to pack at least 16 draws for these ones! The classics are getting lots of repeats, so watch this space!

In the week after the 24 Hours of Power the pace has continued strongly. The day after 24 Hours of Power while the rest of us were nursing tired and sore bodies, Tom 'The Butcher' Farrell made 2nd shot ascents of Slip Slop Slap 29 at Thomo's and the stout Evil E 27 (28?) at The Hood. Oh to be young and able to recover so quickly...

Last Saturday Al Price continued to work his way through the harder Nowra classics, flashing Cheese Monster 30 at Cheesedale.

On Sunday the it was standing room only in the Grease Cave as many routes were fondled but very few chains clipped. Sexy Is The Word saw a bit of attention, Mark Withers gave it a bash after a morning well spent ticking the new improved Jug To Jug V11? at Cheesedale. Ren Bombala ticked Pulling On the Porcelain 23 on his first visit to the cave after a monumental first attempt which saw him denied with the chains in reach. I tried to popularise the little top-rope problems below the start of Lost Weekends, the 22 is a classic! Andi Richardson added to his Grease Cave resume, Cruising up Love Bug 27 and Inflatey Katey 26.

There was strong Canberra contingent at the crag backing up after the bouldering comp there on Saturday. Tick Of The Day went to Ester who climbed the hardest 25 in the known universe A Very Nice Piece of Cake (this opinion maybe influenced by the fact that we're both short and shit on slabs). Strong Canberra lad Joe Horan made an impressive ascent of Top One Thomo 27. Great stuff!

24 Hours of Power Wrap

It was hard to find a car park at Thompson's Point last weekend and the walls were packed with climbers enjoying the stone. Over at the Creek, the South Central car park was packed until well after dark on Saturday as climbers squeezed in that last route of the day. 24 Hours of Power at Nowra was conceived as a way get climbers on the rock, meeting, talking, sharing and building the sense of community that is a wonderful aspect of our sport. The competitive part of the weekend was a sideline to the real business of hanging out, but it did provide many exciting and amusing moments.

The overall points winner was Jan Zbranek whose twenty routes included ascents of Dungeon Master 31, Pimp Behind the Wheels 30, a few 29s and 28s and a stack of routes in the mid 20s. In second place and best Aussie effort was Matt Adams who managed to haul himself up Frosty 29, Ain't No Sunshine 28 and plethora of other classics. Third place went to renaissance man Graham Fairbairn and fourth place to Andi Richardson who managed his 20 routes in a massive one day effort on Saturday (he had to work Sunday) fueled by energy gels and sports drinks. Andi's day culminated in an inspired ascent at 7:30 pm of Come Poo with Me 24 at South Central with his headtorch on and his arms cramping badly! Best Female in the points category was Phoebe (sorry Phoebe, I didn't get your surname!)

In the volume competition Malin Hannu was clear winner in the female division climbing 34 routes, visiting 3 crags, and managing to get lost on the tourist track at Hospital Rocks on Saturday night! The volume male winner was Marcus Loane who bounced out of his car at 6 am on Saturday morning with his harness already on, teamed up with Malin and didn't stop all weekend. Marcus climbed 42 routes, cut new tracks (accidently) at The Lair and still managed to fit in few games of bowling on Saturday night!

In the juniors, Brittany Fletcher took out the female event doing nearly as many routes over the weekend as she has done on rock before in her life! Nick Wagland took home the cake for the best junior male after the stout effort of catching the train down from Coffs Harbour to attend!

A cake was awarded to Jason Piper and Matt Pascoe for the strongest start. These hardcore, psyched lads cranked out Cowboy Junkies 25 by headtorch at 6 am on Saturday to start and were the last ones in on Sunday arvo as they tried to squeeze one more route in!

The cake for 'living up to the routes name' went to Luke Geelan who was on his last route of the day on Sunday, long after his arms had given up. At the top of Fist Full of Steel, with the rope out and nothing left in the tank he snatched the chain and avoided the death plummet. Better to live to fight another day!

The trivia competition was won by Graham Fairbairn and Andrew Bull who should know a thing or two about Nowra climbing history!

Another highlight of the weekend were Wendy Walker making the first ascent of Baby Conehead, a new three star 21 at The Hood, to the right of Girls In the Hood. This route now holds the Nowra record for having the most repeats in its first day, receiving 10 ascents! As the name suggests it's just like Coneheads only littler and easier! It climbs an over hung corner before launching out onto a steep face!!

Unable to participate in the 24 Hours of Power competition due to time constraints, but still keen to be part of the action, Chris Webb-Parsons made it down on the Saturday and made the first ascent of what is now the hardest route at South Central, and Nowra's first 33 (although we do have a 34)! Hats and Hoods is an extension to Crenshaw Boulevard adding a burly boulder on top of this already solid route.

Chris Wallace (Wobblebunns) had what he has declared to be his proudest sporting moment ever when he decimated the field in the old boys ten pin bowling session, not once, but twice. In a flawless display he decided to try some spin and reaped the rewards!

Carlie and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to Nowra last weekend and climbed, hung out, talked, encouraged and generally added to the fantastic atmosphere at the crags. Thanks to all the climbers who participated in this fun style of competition in the light-hearted way in which it was intended. A huge thank you to Big John for donating the sausages and rolls and manning the BBQ on Sunday evening to make sure the climbers were well fed afterwards. We learnt a lot and look forward to doing it again next year in new improved way!

It's the final countdown to the 24 Hours of Power at Nowra!

The weather forecast is good! Keep your fingers crossed.

Nowra Pioneer and Retreading Guru, Big John has come on board as BBQ Chief. He has donated a mountain of sausages and rolls and will don the apron and assemble a cast of Nowra legends to sizzle the sausages and hopefully put some meat on the bones of a few skinny climbers. The BBQ will be held at Shoalhaven Caravan Village (see below) on Sunday afternoon from 4:00pm. Scorecards are to be submitted then and the cake prizes will be awarded. We have allowed for a stack of snags, but as we have no real idea about who's coming the catering has been guess work. We will have a 'Bolts and Barbie Bucket' there and ask that people make a donation of around $5 to cover the costs of holding the event. All left over money will be used for rebolting.

In addition to the 6 categories (points-male, points-female, volume-male, volume-female, junior-male and junior-female) there will be a Nowra Trivia Competition attached to your score sheet. The first mostly correct entry drawn will win. There will be a couple of random prizes awarded too. A 'best single day effort' prize has been suggested, but we'll see what happens on the days.

Bring a pen, we won't be supplying any!

The start of a second golden age?

With the winds from the south last Saturday came renewed hope and massive tickage. Gone was the wetness that had plagued our beloved crags for weeks. Chalk magically appeared on the previously sodden rocks and a lucky few were there to reap the rewards.

First cab off the rank was Carlie LeBreton, who floated up the stunning line in the middle of the Hood to make the first ascent of Funky Gripsta 27. Meanwhile just across the river, Graham Fairbairn was clipping the anchors on his first new route at Nowra in 16 years. Feisty Little Thing 29 is an elegant diagonal line up the wall on the left side of the Fossil Cave.

Those of us not blessed with a new route to tick, had to settle for repeats. I repeated Pimp Behind The Wheels 30 at the Hood and Funky Gripsta. Grant Stewart prised a couple of monkeys off his back, ticking Rabbit Trap 25 and Stone Roses 26. On Sunday, Thomo's was the place to be, and the route to be on was the much neglected and maligned Young, Dumb and Full of Cum 25. Now, contrary to what the guide might have you believe this little gem is not called Young and Dumb, it is not runout, it does not contain a big dyno and is not a slur on Rod! It did however receive ascents from Carlie, Tim Booth, me and it's creator G Man (Fairbairn). So get on it!

24 Hours of Power at Nowra Update

Only 2 weeks till the 24!

Shoalhaven Caravan Village have agreed to offer a special deal to climbers camping there for the weekend. The price quoted is $16 per night for a double, camping. If you're traveling solo, just have a chat to them when you get there. They do have cabins/on-sight vans available too. Give them a call for prices.

To get there, coming from the north, turn left at the second set of lights (Moss Street) after the bridge, just after the speed camera. Follow this road past Nowra High and after it curves right Shoalhaven Caravan Village is on the left.

The after barbeque on Sunday afternoon will also be held at Shoalhaven Caravan Village. Camping and the barbeque will both be down the back on the big grassy area overlooking the ethanol works.

The rules have been amended slightly, check them out below. Basically, we've decided to be less anal and just trust people to stop climbing at 8 pm on Saturday and 4 pm on Sunday and not start before 6 on Sunday. We will still start at Thompsons Point at 6 am on Saturday and we'll hand out score sheets then. After finishing for the day most of us will probably want to crawl up into a ball and die, but for the hard-core there's plenty that Nowra has to offer. Amuse yourselves.

Ticks Before the Deluge

Before the heavens opened a couple of notable ticks were achieved on the hallowed Nowra stone. Christina Bedard cruised through Ain't No Sunshine 28 at South Central and her better half, Al Price pulled off a repeat of El Maco 31. Over at Thompsons Point Justin Jefferson chose to smash his own skull into the rock rather than risk an altercation with his lovely wife Anika. The final score card; he lost a bucket load of blood, gained 2 black eyes and spent an afternoon in Shoalhaven hospital!

24 Hours of Power at Nowra - Rules

1. This is a social event. There is no registration or entry fee.

2. Day One. The event starts at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday the 28^th June at the Thompson’s Point Carpark. Score sheets will be handed out then. If you need a later start you can find us somewhere at Thompson's on Saturday morning.

3. Day One concludes at 8:00 p.m. Please respect the local residents and the rules by stopping climbing then.

4. Day Two. Climbing starts again at 6:00 a.m.

5. Day Two concludes at 4:00 p.m. at the Shoalhaven Caravan Village Barbeque area. Scorecards must be handed in by 4:00p.m.

6. There are 6 categories:

a. Open Men – Volume

b. Open Women – Volume

c. Open Men – Points

d. Open Women – Points

e. Junior Male

f. Junior Female

7. Volume Categories – in the volume category, climbers attempt to climb as many routes as they can, the total number of routes climbed are counted up as the climber’s score.

8. Points Categories – in the points category, climbers must try to do their 20 hardest climbs. Each climb is awarded points.

At most crags there are bonus routes that are worth extra points.

9. Open climbers do not have to choose which category they enter until the end of the event, however only one category may be entered.

10. Junior Categories – Juniors must be 15 years old or younger on the 28^th of June 2008. Juniors’ rules are the same as the volume competition, except that routes may be top-roped or led.

11. All routes must be led (except by Juniors) from the ground to clip the top anchors from the normal finishing stance. Top-roping (for Opens), yoyoing, soloing, roped solos, simul-climbing and anything else like that is not allowed.

12. You may only count each route in your total or score once.

13. You may visit as many or as few crags as you like. All crags in the Nowra area may be climbed at.

14. Chill out, have fun, make new friends and catch up with old friends. Your greatest competitor is yourself.

15. This is a fun event. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify anyone who we consider to be cheating, spoiling the event for others, or generally being a dick.

16. You are responsible for your own safety. Climbing is potentially dangerous and the competition organisers cannot be responsible for the security of the fixed protection, the solidity of the rock or the competence of your belayer. If in doubt, back-off, have rest or go home. Just don’t try to blame us for your mistakes!

The Silent Assassin picks off a few more

Al Price has continued to rampage his way through the harder Nowra classics, making the first on-sight of Rollin With The Syndicate 27 at the Hood and redpointing Pimp Behind The Wheels 30 and Livin' The Hustler's Dream 29, both second shot. Sunday at South Central provided the best conditions this season, a cold southerly came through over night and dried everything up, meaning that even Mega Death 26 was climbable! Rejoicing in the conditions, Al discovered that he could actually hang the tiny holds on his 205 project! On his first visit to the Creek, Jan Zbranek cruised Dungeon Master 31 on his second attempt and Ain't No Sunshine 28, also second go. Jan and Al are pumped up and ready to lock horns at the 24 Hours of Power at Nowra!!

Boas Kills It

So what is the best 22 at Nowra? Well according to 46% of people responding to our blog survey, Killer Boas at Thomos rules! Killer Boas is the epitome of Nowra climbing; short and burly with beautiful moves on exquisite rock. First climbed by Andrew Bull and Tony Barten in 1991 (the seconder got first ascent honours in those days!) the route originally passed 4 carrots and belayed off the tree on the sandy ledge. The route was subsequently modernised with three rings and a chain. Chuck a lap this weekend to find out what all the fuss is about.

Al Price has stunned the Nowra climbing world with an amazing score of 205 on the hallowed lanes of Bomaderry Bowl. Al (The Silent Assassin) started by clinically collecting spares before unleashing a fury of strikes in the final 6 frames. The Silent Assassin's performance ranks as the the highest total yet achieved by the normally incompetent climbers. Only Gary 'The Professional' Hillard is believed to be capable of matching it with The Assassin now.

Not content to set new standards at the lanes, Al then proceeded to South Central to sink some steel into a line to the right of Ain't No Sunshine and repeat Physical Graffiti 31. He then waltzed over to Rosies and flashed Frosty 29. 2008 at Nowra just keeps getting hotter!

Girls (and boys) In The Hood

It's fun for the whole family!

Season 2008 has raced off to a frantic start.

While the Blueys was soaked Nowra climbers basked in (occasional) sunshine and lots was done.

Nathan Hoette got in two fine repeats, making the second ascent of Zac's 2007 classic Trailer Trash in the Grease Cave, commenting that he thought the grade should be 32. The route starts up White Trash, crosses into Skin To Skin and then punches straight out the roof. He also made the 2nd(?) ascent of Vince's Slipping into Narcism 31 in the Little Grease Cave. This one starts up Narcosis and finishes up Slip Slop Slap.

Matt Adams made short work of Insane in the Brain 30 at the Hood, after the holds at the top were excavated from the sand pit that was covering them. Also at the Hood I cleaned up and climbed an old project to do the first ascent of Rollin With The Syndicate 27. It goes to the second bolt on Girls In The Hood and the goes right to a ring, up to a second ring and then right to the arete and up. A classic, but of course I think that! Rollin's already had a few repeats and received rave reviews. An old Fieg classic, Pimp Behind The Wheels 29 here has been cleaned and rebolted so it's primed for more ascents. There are a few projects at the Hood, please respect the work put in and stay off them until they've been climbed.

Back over at Thomos, Justin Jefferson squirmed his way up Love Bug 27 and Nig Campbell did Narcosis 30 and he flashed Evil E at the Hood. Axel Triton ticked Ain't No Sunshine 28 at South Central on his first visit to the creek.
